4.1 Shadows in HDR – Learn HDR video

In this video, we’ll take a look a few techniques I use when grading in HDR. I’ll start by briefly talking about the PQ-curve, and then show you how how I grade a low-key clip with nice punchy highlights.

Summary

Color grading for an HDR10 delivery is no different from a Dolby Vision delivery, both are based on the PQ-curve.

Due to the greater latitude and the nature of the PQ-curve, HDR can provide improved shadow detail over SDR.

Be mindful of making gradient objects (like a sky) too bright, since you have less code values in the brighter range.

Activate the node HDR-mode to get a different feeling from the grading controls when working with the luminance.

Use the Log-highlight wheel to control the highlights, and adjust the high-range to get even more precise control.
